Hey there, it’s Jennifer Tilney, CEO Of Platinum Skincare.
One of the most frequent questions I get is “How do I get rid of brown spots, dark spots, age spots or other pigmentation issues.”
Now if you’re dealing with this, it can be pretty confusing. There’s laser removal, dermabrasion, freezing, and all these scary procedures that cost hundreds or more each visit.
Or you can go the self-treatment route, which is what I want to talk about today.
Because while many types of treatments can work, I want to talk specifically about using at-home products to replace all the expensive treatments.
That’s what Platinum is all about. Making amazing results accessible at home.
So, to keep this simple, I want to focus on an uncomplicated routine anyone can do. It’s as easy as 1, 2, …3
First is the Prep work.
If you want to get results, then you need to make sure your skin is turning over.
Most pigmentation runs very deep in the skin – therefore we need to exfoliate the upper layers so our treatments can get deeper into the skin and so that the discoloration can be sloughed off.
If you aren’t currently exfoliating daily, then this is going to get tricky as the treatments won’t likely penetrate deep enough.
So how does that work? You need to start using acids and retinoids. An acid cleanser morning and evenings… plus Vitamin A at night will speed up cellular turnover.
But remember look for Retinol that is very yellow - like our retinol molecular serums. If it’s not yellow… it’s most likely not potent enough to get results… I’ll cover that in another video.
Ok, so Step Two:
Luminate.
So, in order to brighten and luminate the skin we have to focus on two elements. Fading the current melanin in the skin and preventing the formation of new pigmentation.
That’s where certain ingredients like hydroxy acids, polyphenols like Resveratol (you know the anti-aging ingredient in red wine and blueberries?…. very key), and other lighteners come in to play. And for us, we stick with our Fade Bright Lightening gel which we’ve sold thousands of, and have hundreds of reviews from people who’ve used it to get real results.
Typically, that will take about 4-6 weeks. Luckily, one bottle lasts about 3 months … so you’ll be able to really see results before you need any refills.
So, the last piece of the puzzle is Protection.
Now, if you’re going to put in the work to fade those pesky spots, the last thing you want to do is take a step backward for every step forward.
And the key to this is avoiding the sun and using SPF.
This one I almost consider a no-brainer - but it needs to be mentioned because some people aren’t putting on the appropriate SPF every day. If you are dealing with pigmentation, you absolutely MUST put on an SPF of at least 40…preferably 50 …. If you are spending time outdoors remember to REAPPLY!
One single application just will not do for a day at the beach with the kids. Apply every few hours and wear a large hat. *Large brim hats are IN – trust me!. Rock it and look like a super star wherever you go WHILE protecting your skin.
Another ingredient that protects the skin is Vitamin C. Use our High Octane Vitamin C to protecting the skin from UVA and UVB damage - all while promoting pigmentation reduction and brightening in the skin.
Since so much of the pigmentation starts to show as we get older, the antiaging benefits of vitamin C are an even bigger boost!
But a word of warning. Don’t buy a lightening product that just includes a little bit of Vitamin C. The addition of this vitamin in everyday products is just a pointless “sales pitch” to make the product sound more effective. Don’t count on a daily cream or serum to give you the high amounts you need. Get a special Vitamin C product only.
Now there is also a bonus level to this process.
Especially if you have melasma, or deeper pigmentation.
You’re going to want to use a Peel.
Now you can go the traditional route and use chemical peels like
1.Lactic 50% if you are sensitive. You can do this 1x per week. Or…
2.Mandelic 40% is great for all non-sensitive types. You can do this 1x per week. Or…
3.TCA 13% for facial use… or 20% for body use … or those that are advanced peelers.
Or, use our new Dream Peel, which is the strongest, low irritation peel around. If you’ve ever been afraid of “the burn” from acid peels, then you might want to check this one out. You can put it on a few nights in a row and peel without all the acids and complications…
Ok.
To recap.
- Start with your Prep-work
- make sure to exfoliate daily and use a retinol if you want to speed up the process.
- Luminate by fading current brown spots and inhibiting melanin with a product like our Fade Bright Lightener.
- Protect, by using SPF of 40 or higher daily, or boosting with Vitamin C if you want the best anti-aging effects.
And Peel if you need quicker results or have a lifetime of damage.
One point I really want to stress. You MUST go the distance with this. Make sure you give it 4-6 weeks to see the best results.
So now you’re brown spot fading experts!
